Ethereum's Recovery Stalls Amid ETF Outflows and Rising Liquidation Risk

Ethereum's price recovery has stalled near $2,500 after breaking above key support levels, as traders grapple with declining volume and persistent ETF outflows. The altcoin fell below $2,250 support after holding it for two days, before stabilizing near $2,400. A subsequent rebound pushed ETH above $2,500, reaching $2,519, but upward momentum has since plateaued.

Spot trading volume has declined sharply, while weekly ETF outflows remain elevated at $542 million, indicating weak demand. Heavy liquidations driven by leveraged long positions have accelerated the downward pressure. Analysts highlight $2,408 as a critical support level; a breakdown below this threshold could expose further downside toward $2,350–$2,400. On the upside, reclaiming $2,560 would signal improving demand and could open recovery potential toward $2,625.

Liquidation Pressures Mount

Ethereum's derivatives market shows warning signs. According to positioning data, the 30-day and 180-day open interest deltas remain negative, indicating that long-term leveraged positions continue to decline. The whale-versus-retail delta is also negative, suggesting that large traders are supporting fewer bearish positions compared to retail buyers.

Ethereum's total open interest stands at approximately 10.58 million ETH, valued at roughly $12.9 billion. A negative delta reading near 940,000 ETH reinforces the scale of positioning pressure in the market. Further price declines could trigger additional liquidations and selling, while reduced exposure might lower volatility as the market stabilizes.

Bitfinex Longs Surge Amid Risk

Despite the sell-off, some traders are positioning for a rebound. Bitfinex long positions have risen to nearly $283,405, reflecting aggressive bullish bets. This concentration suggests certain traders view recent losses as a buying opportunity rather than the start of steeper declines.

However, these leveraged positions carry substantial risk. Relative Strength Index readings have climbed above 82, indicating extremely stretched momentum. If ETH fails to sustain its recovery, these long positions may face pressure to exit, potentially adding fresh selling pressure. Conversely, continued price strength could reward early buyers and encourage further bullish positioning.
