Ethereum's staking ecosystem continues to grow despite falling returns, with new capital flowing in even as yields decline toward 2.5%.
According to a Bitwise report, Ethereum finished Q3 with 43.8 million ETH staked, equivalent to almost 36% of the total supply. The quarter saw nearly 2 million tokens added to staking, marking the sixth consecutive quarter of growth in this metric. However, annualized staking yield has dropped from 2.81% to 2.63%.
The divergence between entry and exit demand underscores the strength of staking interest. Data from Beaconcha.in shows approximately 1.39 million ETH waiting in the deposit queue with an estimated wait of more than 24 days, while the exit queue contains just 39,000 tokens. This imbalance reflects substantially stronger demand to enter staking than to leave, despite the network-wide staking rate declining toward 2.6%.
The contrast is stark compared to conditions just over a year ago, when the exit queue reached over 475,000 validators seeking to withdraw.
Institutional Capital Drives Growth
Bitwise identified institutional entities, including staking ETFs and corporate treasuries, as key contributors to this year's inflows. BitMine has emerged as a significant participant, reporting over 5 million staked ETH representing about 84% of its entire treasury. At approximately 2.6% yield, the company's chairman Tom Lee expects the position to generate more than $300 million annually.
Network Revenue Pressures
Staking rewards are increasingly dominated by newly issued ETH. Bitwise's report indicates that more than 96% of staking rewards currently come from new token issuance, with transaction tips and MEV contributing only marginally. Network revenues declined to roughly $40.6 million in Q3 from $63 million in the previous quarter.
These trends raise questions about sustainable staking levels as yields compress and issuance concerns mount. Ethereum developers have already discussed proposals aimed at slowing staking growth, including EIP-8361, which proposed adjusting issuance incentives as the staking ratio approaches 50%.
Despite lower yields, approximately 1.4 million ETH remains queued to enter staking, suggesting demand continues to expand.
