Ethereum Targets Full Quantum-Resistant Layer 1 by End of 2029

The Ethereum Foundation’s core division has outlined a roadmap to make the Layer 1 blockchain network quantum-resistant across its execution, consensus, and data layers by the end of 2029. The timeline aligns with independent post-quantum migration goals and Q-Day estimates established by technology companies such as Google, Cloudflare, and Microsoft.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin previously identified several quantum-vulnerable areas within the ecosystem, including consensus-layer BLS signatures, ECDSA signatures for EOAs, KZG-based data availability, and application-layer proofs using Groth16 or KZG.

Upcoming Upgrades and Testing

As the ecosystem prepares for upcoming Glamsterdam and Hegota upgrades, the Hegota upgrade will serve as an initial test to determine whether subsequent post-quantum forks occur on schedule. The Ethereum Foundation is targeting implementation for Hegota in late Q4 2026, while currently grading 62 proposed Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs).

Among the proposed changes, the foundation highlighted FOCIL (EIP-7805) on the consensus layer and Frame Transactions (EIP-8141) on the execution layer as essential, S-tier proposals. Specifically, EIP-8141 is designed to allow users to pay transaction fees using ERC-20 tokens without needing to hold ETH in their wallets.

Vitalik Buterin has expressed long-term optimism regarding blockchain cybersecurity, noting that the primary hurdle lies in the transition phase and expressing confidence that networks like Ethereum and Bitcoin can manage potential issues.

Market Activity and Price Performance

In the broader market, investors continue to monitor ETH price movements and trading volumes as the ecosystem approaches its next developmental phases. Recent market data indicates activity across derivatives and spot markets, with total ETH futures open interest shifting as participants track macroeconomic indicators, including US inflation data and Federal Reserve rate expectations.
