FalconX and GSR Execute First UNI Futures Block Trade on CME

CME Group has recorded its first block trade in Uniswap (UNI) futures, one day after the contracts went live. The trade was executed on October 20, 2026, by crypto trading firms FalconX and GSR. Uniswap founder Hayden Adams described it as the first UNI block trade and the first for any DeFi token run through regulated traditional finance channels.

What actually happened

CME launched UNI futures on October 19, 2026, following an announcement on September 22. The new product brings CME’s lineup of single-asset crypto futures to 11 contracts.

A block trade is a large transaction negotiated privately between two parties and then booked through the exchange. The notional value of the debut trade was not disclosed.

The contracts are cash-settled, meaning no actual UNI tokens change hands when a contract expires; gains and losses are paid out in cash instead. CME offers two sizes: the standard contract covers 10,000 UNI, while the micro version covers 1,000 UNI. Trading runs through CME Globex, the exchange’s electronic platform.

Why institutions are paying attention

Executives from CME, FalconX and GSR all pointed to growing institutional interest in tokens beyond the biggest names. FalconX’s Griffin Sears said that interest is being driven by the distinct use cases of DeFi tokens such as Uniswap.

CME’s broader crypto numbers suggest the appetite is real. As of late October 2026, its crypto futures and options averaged over 242,000 contracts per day in 2026, with a notional value of $7.9 billion. Open interest in CME’s crypto futures stood near 240,000 contracts, equating to a notional value of $14.3 billion.

The background: DeFi meets regulated rails

Decentralized finance was built on a simple premise: code could replace intermediaries like brokers, exchanges and clearinghouses. Uniswap became one of the flagship examples of that idea. Yet the first regulated futures product for its token relies on exactly the kind of intermediaries DeFi set out to bypass.

Many large funds face rules on custody, counterparties and approved venues. A regulated exchange product can clear those hurdles in a way a direct token purchase often cannot. Adams framed the trade as a first for the DeFi category, not just for UNI.

What this means

For CME, the UNI listing tests how far down the crypto market it can go. Expanding to 11 single-asset contracts signals confidence that demand exists beyond the largest assets. For FalconX and GSR, being first on the tape carries reputational value.

The size of the first trade remains undisclosed, so the market has no way to judge how much capital is actually committed. Volume and open interest in the UNI contracts over the coming weeks will say more than any single debut trade.
