FBI Returns Alleged $165 Million Crypto Ponzi Scheme Mastermind From Fiji

US authorities have returned Edward Zimbardi to the United States following his deportation from Fiji, placing the alleged mastermind of a $165 million crypto investment scheme back within the jurisdiction of federal prosecutors.

According to the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, a federal grand jury indicted Zimbardi on July 8 on 12 counts of wire fraud, 12 counts of money laundering, and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.

The Crypto Program Operations

Prosecutors state that Zimbardi operated an enterprise named The Crypto Program from June 2022 through August 2023. The platform sold advertising packages that promised investors guaranteed monthly returns of 25%.

During this period, thousands of investors transferred more than $165 million in cryptocurrency to wallets controlled by Zimbardi. Investigators allege that instead of using the capital as advertised, Zimbardi:

  • Directed over $34 million into high-risk foreign currency trading.
  • Utilized funds from newer participants to pay off earlier investors in a classic Ponzi scheme structure.
  • Spent at least $10 million on personal expenses, including luxury vehicles, alimony, and a home for his son.

Regulatory Action and Extradition

State regulators intervened while the operation was active. In June 2023, the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation ordered The Crypto Program to halt its investment packages, concluding they were unqualified securities involving materially misleading information. The scheme ceased operations approximately two months later.

The Justice Department reported that Zimbardi fled to Fiji in July 2025 after discovering the FBI was investigating him. Following coordination between the FBI, the State Department, and Fijian authorities, Zimbardi was deported to the US on Aug. 14, 2026.

Zimbardi was scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate judge in Los Angeles on Aug. 17, with prosecutors seeking his continued detention as the federal case proceeds in Georgia.
