The FBI seized more than $560,000 in cryptocurrency intended for Hamas through court-authorized operations, the Justice Department disclosed on September 1. Agents also took control of domains and servers used for fundraising and recruitment, and intercepted donations directed through the captured infrastructure.
The operation targeted an encrypted group chat that directed supporters to a fundraising website and circulated cryptocurrency addresses for donations. Investigators conducted three separate cryptocurrency seizures on March 25, June 25, and October 10, 2025, totaling approximately $560,000. The action built on an initial $200,000 cryptocurrency seizure announced in March 2025, which targeted at least 17 cryptocurrency addresses connected to a collection network that had moved more than $1.5 million since October 2024.
Tracking Funds Across Networks
Authorities traced funds passing through cryptocurrency exchanges, over-the-counter brokers, and accounts registered to individuals living in Turkey and elsewhere. Control of the captured AlQassam.ps domains and servers allowed agents to intercept cryptocurrency sent through the fundraising network and combine blockchain transaction records with identifying information obtained from exchanges, online communications, and human sources.
In July 2025, prosecutors announced a $2 million civil forfeiture action targeting assets held through Tether and Binance accounts linked to Gaza-based financial operations accused of supporting Hamas.
International Coordination and Donor Information
The seizures follow coordinated international measures against financial facilitators. The Treasury Department sanctioned Hamas-linked exchange networks in Gaza and their associates in January 2024, while the United Kingdom and Australia imposed concurrent sanctions on Hamas officials and facilitators.
The FBI obtained information regarding thousands of individuals who contacted Hamas online in an effort to donate using cryptocurrency and other traditional means. Financial regulators have urged banks and cryptocurrency businesses to watch for payment patterns potentially connected to Hamas fundraising, with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network issuing alerts identifying suspicious transaction indicators in October 2023.
