FINMA Approves Switzerland’s First Retail Bitcoin ETF

Switzerland’s retail investors can now access a regulated fund that holds Bitcoin directly after the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority approved the country’s first retail Bitcoin exchange-traded fund on October 20, 2026.

What FINMA approved

The fund is classified under Swiss law as an “other fund for alternative investments,” a category that determines the rules it must follow. FINMA granted an exemption from standard risk-diversification requirements, which normally require funds sold to the public to spread holdings across multiple assets.

The regulator justified the waiver by pointing to Bitcoin’s established track record and significant trading volumes. FINMA’s reasoning was specific to Bitcoin rather than to crypto assets as a broad category.

Conditions attached

The approval includes conditions. Supervised institutions involved with the fund must meet custody and operational requirements set out in FINMA guidance published on January 12, 2026. That guidance laid out risk-mitigation measures for institutions handling such products.

The fund must also carry clear warnings about volatility and the possibility of losses. Sellers are required to follow conduct rules during the sale process.

Shift from qualified to retail investors

FINMA previously approved a crypto fund in 2021, but that product was limited to qualified investors and invested in a diversified basket of digital assets. The 2026 approval changes both elements: access widens to the retail public, while the portfolio focuses on a single asset.

More applications expected

Multiple fund providers have submitted or announced applications for similar products, suggesting Switzerland’s first retail Bitcoin ETF may not remain the only one. FINMA’s January guidance provides custody and operational expectations for applicants, while the October approval shows how the diversification question can be resolved for Bitcoin specifically.

What it means

The immediate effect is access. Swiss retail investors who previously had to buy Bitcoin directly or use products not designed for them can now hold it through a regulated fund with mandated safeguards. The exemption logic also indicates that other digital assets would need to meet a similar bar before receiving comparable treatment for single-asset funds. The required warnings remain relevant because Bitcoin is volatile and a single-asset fund offers no cushion from other holdings.
