Hsin-Ju Chuang, a 37-year-old former partner at crypto venture firm Hack VC, was found dead on Aug. 24 in a vehicle in California's Mojave Desert. The California Highway Patrol discovered her body at the scene. Authorities have not announced a cause of death or released autopsy results.
Chuang's death drew attention in the crypto community due to a public dispute with Hack VC. On Aug. 23, one day before her death was discovered, she posted on X that she had rejected a settlement from the firm that would have required her to remain silent about her experience there.
In her post, Chuang stated: "I've decided I'd rather take $0 than accept a settlement that requires me to stay silent about what happened to me." She alleged that she had been required to work through a serious medical emergency, faced threats and intimidation when seeking to leave the firm, and later experienced problems with health-insurance coverage. These allegations have not been independently verified.
Chuang announced she had fired her lawyers and planned to release evidence from her time at Hack VC on Aug. 26. As of press time, no connection between the timing of her post and her death has been established.
Hack VC responded on Aug. 23, stating its understanding of events differed materially from Chuang's account. Co-founder Alexander Pack said on X that the firm had not spoken to Chuang directly for over 10 months and was not aware of the circumstances surrounding her death.
Before joining Hack VC in March 2025, Chuang held growth roles at Stellar and Solana, worked on the fully homomorphic encryption project Fhenix, and founded Dystopia Labs, an events and developer community organization. Her death prompted tributes from crypto founders and colleagues who remembered her work supporting early-stage projects and organizing industry events.
