Zcash (ZEC) has declined alongside broader cryptocurrency market volatility, though the asset has gained over 425% over the past 12 months.
Early Adoption Phase
Tyler Winklevoss, co-founder of cryptocurrency exchange Gemini, recently stated that Zcash remains in an early adoption stage. At TOKEN2049, his twin brother Cameron asked attendees about their ZEC holdings. According to Tyler, only around 10 people raised their hands among thousands present, which he cited as evidence of limited mainstream adoption.
Zcash distinguishes itself through privacy features that allow users to shield transaction details. This capability appeals to individuals seeking financial confidentiality, though it also complicates investigators' efforts to trace suspicious transfers.
Winklevoss Asset Services has filed for a Spot Zcash ETF with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, indicating the company's growing interest in the asset.
Increased Use in Illicit Activity
On-chain analyst Specter, reported by Wu Blockchain, observed that threat actors are increasingly moving stolen assets into ZEC. This follows blockchain investigator ZachXBT's disclosure that the Bitget exploiter allegedly used Zcash to shield stolen assets.
Subsequent transactions reportedly involved funds linked to the Cryptobills Ledger security incident and the $12 million Triple-A exploit. These developments suggest attackers may be exploiting privacy features to complicate fund tracing.
