German savings banks are expanding their service offerings to include cryptocurrency trading through DekaBank, the securities arm of the Sparkassen banking group. The service allows customers to buy and sell five digital assets directly within their existing banking applications.
The rollout provides crypto trading access to retail customers who have not previously traded digital assets. Five cryptocurrencies are available through the service: Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana, and Polygon. Trading operates without fixed exchange hours, though system maintenance and market disruptions can affect availability.
How the Service Works
DekaBank provides custody of digital assets, holding them centrally and controlling the private keys that secure them. For each transaction, DekaBank offers a binding price guaranteed for a limited time. Customers can execute trades independently when the system is available.
Customer service support is available Monday through Thursday from 8:00 to 18:00 and Friday until 17:00. Five savings banks are currently participating, with more than 230 additional institutions reportedly interested in joining.
Key Risks and Limitations
Cryptocurrency assets are not covered by statutory deposit insurance that protects traditional bank deposits. Digital asset prices can experience sharp fluctuations capable of resulting in total loss.
DekaBank cautions that trades may be delayed or unavailable at desired times or prices. Custody arrangements differ from standard bank deposits, with private keys held in a jointly managed wallet, and withdrawals restricted to approved cryptocurrency asset providers.
Tax considerations also apply. Under current German rules, private gains from cryptocurrency sales are subject to a €1,000 annual exemption threshold, though tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change.
