Germany's Sparkassen savings-bank group is beginning a phased cryptocurrency-trading rollout integrated into its existing banking app, bringing digital assets into a traditional retail-banking environment.
The first participating Sparkassen banks began offering crypto trading on October 19. The rollout is gradual, with 30 to 40 institutions expected to join each month. Individual regional savings banks decide when to participate rather than operating under a centralized activation switch.
The initial offering includes Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana, and Polygon. The group's association expects a substantial number of participating institutions to be connected during the first half of 2027.
DekaBank is providing the trading service, with Börse Stuttgart handling custody arrangements. Customers can access trading through the Sparkassen app without opening separate accounts at cryptocurrency exchanges.
Sparkassen emphasizes that the product targets customers making independent trading decisions rather than serving as a mass-market offering. The group continues to characterize cryptocurrencies as highly speculative assets, warning of significant volatility and the possibility of total loss. Traditional savings products remain the bank's recommended approach for long-term wealth building.
The expansion represents a notable shift for Germany's retail financial market, as traditional deposit-focused banks respond to customer demand that previously directed users toward specialist cryptocurrency exchanges and mobile-first financial applications.
