Germany's AfD Records Strong Regional Election Result, Reviving Pro-Bitcoin Policy Questions

Germany's Alternative for Germany (AfD) secured 43.8% of the vote in Sunday's Saxony-Anhalt state election, marking its strongest regional result to date. The performance has renewed focus on the party's cryptocurrency policy platform at a time when it leads national opinion polls.

The AfD fell short of an outright majority in the 83-seat state parliament, leaving coalition negotiations ahead. Nationally, the party's position in polling keeps its policy agenda in view across the country.

AfD's Cryptocurrency Platform

The AfD has positioned itself as Germany's most crypto-friendly major party. Its national platform calls for "extensive deregulation" of Bitcoin, wallets, and trading, arguing that regulators have been overly cautious.

In October 2025, the AfD filed a Bundestag motion stating that the German government had failed to recognize Bitcoin strategically as an asset suitable for currency reserves during periods of monetary instability. The motion described Bitcoin as a potential reserve asset.

The party also opposes the digital euro, the European Central Bank's proposed digital currency, and wants cash enshrined as a constitutional right.

AfD lawmakers have pushed for lighter Bitcoin treatment under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework, which serves as the bloc's licensing regime for crypto firms. The party argues that MiCA was built primarily for centrally issued tokens rather than decentralized ones like Bitcoin.

The AfD supports maintaining a one-year Bitcoin holding exemption from taxation, a position that aligns with industry groups tracking German crypto legislation.

Policy Implementation Faces Obstacles

Despite the strong regional performance, the AfD's cryptocurrency agenda faces significant barriers. Mainstream German parties continue to refuse governing coalitions with the far-right party at the national level, leaving Bitcoin policy proposals in the realm of political discussion rather than legislative action.

In Saxony-Anhalt, coalition talks remain unresolved following the election result.
