Global Money Supply Hits Record Highs as Bitcoin Rallies

The global money supply has reached a record milestone alongside a significant upward move in bitcoin's price over a seven-day period. U.S. M2 hit a record $23.16 trillion, while global measures for major regions pushed toward $103 trillion.

M2 measures cash combined with money held in highly liquid accounts. Analysts monitor these figures because expanding money supplies can lead excess capital toward equities, precious metals, and cryptocurrencies. Estimates from sources such as Crossborder Capital's Michael Howell place global liquidity figures even higher.

Following a weekly high above $81,000, bitcoin traded between $78,250 and $79,500 over a 24-hour period. Having started August near $63,000 following a U.S. Treasury bond buyback announcement, the asset's recent run-up has brought global M2 back into market discussions, although prices remain below the October 2025 all-time high above $126,000.

Market observers note that historical bitcoin bull cycles in 2017-2018 and 2020-2021 coincided with M2 and liquidity expansions. Conversely, government tightening conditions have historically led to bearish cycles. Commentator Ash Crypto suggested on X that bitcoin's long-awaited catch-up with M2 may be taking shape as global liquidity hits an all-time high and the U.S. Dollar Index slumps.

Market watchers emphasize that record-setting global M2 does not automatically guarantee higher bitcoin prices. The survival of the catch-up trade depends on U.S. M2 metrics, the DXY, bitcoin ETF flows, and whether capital continues to rotate out of cash-friendly investments into alternative assets.
