Quantum Progress Sparks Preparedness Push

Google Quantum AI has achieved a significant reduction in quantum computing errors with its Willow chip, cutting a critical error class by approximately 40-fold, according to research published in Science. The breakthrough addresses what researchers describe as quantum computing's largest efficiency bottleneck: producing clean, error-free quantum states needed for certain operations.

Google's technique filters quantum states by injecting rough states through a series of checks and discarding those that fail, with surviving states achieving 99.99% fidelity. The company's approach could reduce the computational overhead that, by some estimates, consumes up to 95% of a quantum machine's capacity.

Timeline to Cryptographic Threat Remains Extended

Despite the advance, experts emphasize that the immediate threat to cryptocurrency security remains distant. Breaking RSA-2048 encryption would require quantum error rates approximately one million times cleaner than Google's current demonstration. Estimates show the computational requirements have decreased substantially: in 2019, cracking RSA-2048 was projected to need 20 million noisy qubits, but by 2025 that estimate fell to under one million qubits.

Research suggests Bitcoin's elliptic curve cryptography could theoretically be vulnerable with under 500,000 physical qubits, though Google's Willow currently operates with 105 qubits.

Crypto Industry Takes Preventive Action

Several cryptocurrency projects have begun implementing quantum-resistant measures. Sui is already running quantum-safe transactions on a test network, while Ethereum, Zcash, and Near have announced plans to implement quantum-resistant protocols. Coinbase has argued that migration to quantum-safe infrastructure should begin immediately.

Security recommendations include moving funds to fresh addresses that have never signed transactions, since the signing process exposes public keys that could theoretically become vulnerable.

Market Activity and Industry Moves

Bitcoin traded at $82,700, up 1% on the day, while Ethereum gained 4% to $2,480. Other major cryptocurrencies showed similar gains. The White House announced it has no crypto lead following adviser Patrick Witt's departure to the private sector.

Binance US is attempting to raise up to $100 million at a $1 billion valuation, down significantly from its $4.5 billion valuation in 2022. Mastercard launched its Global Money Platform using BVNK, the crypto infrastructure firm it acquired for approximately $1.8 billion in August, enabling banks and fintechs to manage accounts holding both fiat and stablecoins.
