Google's Quantum Milestone
Google has achieved 99.99% accuracy in producing magic states, a critical component for quantum computers to generate meaningful results. According to a paper published in Science journal, the company successfully implemented magic state cultivation on its Willow quantum processor, achieving a 40-fold reduction in errors compared to previous methods.
The breakthrough improves efficiency by requiring only about half of Willow's 105 physical qubits, compared to earlier approaches that demanded 95% of quantum computer capacity for magic state production, leaving just 5% for computation.
Timeline to Cryptographic Risk
Google's milestone achieved a magic state error rate of 1 in 10,000. Cryptocurrencies currently remain secure because breaking Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) used to secure wallets and signatures would require quantum computing architecture scaled by 100,000 times the current level. Breaking Bitcoin specifically would require at least 1,200 to 1,450 stable logical qubits, compared to the current 105.
Quantum-Ready Blockchains
Several blockchain networks have already implemented Post-Quantum Cryptography measures approved by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST):
- Quantum Resistant Ledger (QRL) — Built with native quantum resistance from inception in 2018, using hash-based cryptographic methods and identified as among the most quantum-safe blockchains by the Blockchain Quantum Readiness Index.
- Algorand (ALGO) — An institutional-grade Layer-1 network with a $1.07 billion market cap that utilizes lattice-based digital signatures for quantum security.
- Abelian (ABEL) — A Layer-1 blockchain designed from inception with lattice-based cryptography and customizable privacy options.
- Mochimo (MCM) — A native post-quantum network operating a live mainnet since 2018 using hash-based cryptography.
- QANplatform (QAN) — A developer-focused Layer-1 network incorporating both lattice-based and hash-based mechanisms to protect EVM-compatible smart contracts.
Cellframe (CELL) and Nervous Network (CKB) are also advancing quantum security implementations. Bitcoin and Ethereum both have quantum security execution proposals in development, with Ethereum maintaining one of the most active roadmaps for this objective.
