Google Cloud Launches Multi-Party Compute Service for Institutional Crypto Custody

Google Cloud has documented a Multi-Party Compute service for institutional digital-asset custody. The service is in pre-general-availability stage, with documentation referencing an October 2026 API and migration path.

The service addresses custody risks by dividing signing authority among independent participants so that an entire private key does not need to exist in one operational location. It employs threshold signing, where a transaction can be authorized when required participants cooperate, while compromising fewer than the threshold should not give an attacker signing control.

Technical Features

The offering describes a hardened threshold-signing approach using isolated key shares backed by separate hardware environments. Policy checks and enterprise governance allow organizations to set rules around who can request operations. Google lists support for secp256k1 signing for Bitcoin and Ethereum-style networks, with Ed25519 support for Solana documented as coming soon.

Market Implications

The market relevance is indirect. Stronger institutional custody tools may lower barriers for firms considering digital assets, but a preview launch does not create automatic demand for specific tokens. The more meaningful effect would be regulated institutions becoming comfortable enough with key management to hold and move assets in production.

A new security tool can improve one part of a custody system without becoming a universal solution. The service aims to address three custody concerns: theft or unauthorized use of a key, temporary inability to sign, and permanent loss of key material. However, splitting keys also creates operational questions about participant uptime, recovery, rule administration and policy changes.

What Matters Next

Milestones to monitor include general availability, demonstrated integrations with regulated custodians and disclosed security evaluations. Practical documentation of recovery and policy administration will be more useful to adopters than broad claims about eliminating private-key risk.
