Google Cloud Disruption Impacts Major UK Banks and Fintech
Revolut, Lloyds, HSBC, and Bank of Scotland experienced service outages following a disruption at Google Cloud's London-based data center. Google Cloud's status page identified the issue within the europe-west2 region, reporting elevated errors and intermittent network failures as engineering teams worked on a fix.
Revolut users initially reported failed payments before the UK-based firm confirmed the issues. According to a Reuters source, the problems are tied directly to the Google Cloud disruption. Outage submission site Down Detector also received reports of issues affecting Lloyds, HSBC, and Bank of Scotland.
Extent of the Outage
Revolut's status page indicated widespread service disruptions, affecting features including:
- Card payments and ATM withdrawals
- Bank transfers and signing in
- Identity verification and chat support
- Stocks and crypto trading services
Google stated that a power event caused the disruption and noted that the event itself has now been mitigated, offering an apology for the impact. The tech giant suggested that affected users could attempt to migrate impacted workloads to another available zone or region.
The incident follows prior cloud-related disruptions in the industry, including an April 2025 Amazon-related cloud outage that led major cryptocurrency exchanges to pause withdrawals and report operational issues.
