Hardware Wallet Shipping Records Create Long-Term Identity Risks

Hardware wallet manufacturers collect personal information to deliver security devices, but those shipping records can persist for years and create vulnerability to targeted scams even after the initial purchase.

Trezor reported in a September 4 update that approximately 67,000 additional US customers were affected by a breach at ShipMonk, its shipping provider, involving orders from 2019 to 2021. The company now lists 80,689 affected customers overall. Trezor stated that its systems and devices were unaffected and that parcel contents were not exposed. The breach included only contact and delivery details, with no funds stolen or misappropriated.

How Shipping Data Enables Fraud

Hardware wallets protect cryptocurrency by storing private keys—the secrets needed to authorize transactions—on a dedicated device separate from computers that may be vulnerable to compromise. Recovery from device loss relies on backup phrases that can restore wallet access on another device.

Attackers who obtain recovery phrases can bypass all device protections. However, convincing wallet owners to share this information has historically been difficult. Shipping records change this dynamic by providing personal details that make fraudulent messages appear legitimate.

Ledger has documented phishing campaigns using physical mail to direct recipients to websites requesting recovery words. An email or letter referencing a specific order a customer recognizes is substantially more persuasive than generic warnings sent to millions of recipients.

Shipping information provides limited but actionable insight: it confirms a person purchased a hardware wallet and reveals their address and name, but does not disclose current holdings or whether the device is still in use. A contact detail combined with knowledge of a past purchase is sufficient for targeted social engineering.

Persistence of Temporary Data

Shipping information serves legitimate operational purposes during delivery and returns processing. Companies handling international sales typically outsource fulfillment to specialized vendors. Problems arise when temporary operational data becomes a permanent corporate asset stored across database replicas, support-system exports, and backups.

The Federal Trade Commission guidance recommends collecting sensitive information only for legitimate business needs, tracking where it goes, and disposing of it securely. Deletion clauses in vendor contracts and assurances of compliance are standard but do not constitute direct evidence that all relevant systems have applied retention policies.

Unlike payment card numbers, which can be replaced, or passwords, which can be retired, residential addresses remain valid indefinitely. An address copied years earlier can still facilitate impersonation or record matching long after the original purchase.

Reducing Risk Through Data Practices

Manufacturers can reduce exposure by collecting less information where possible, separating data that does not need to travel together, and establishing evidence that contractors remove records when their operational role is complete. Buyers can explore privacy measures such as parcel lockers or separate contact details for online orders, though each approach has limitations.

Hardware wallets protect private keys by isolating them from ordinary computers. Protecting the person who buys one requires data handling practices that extend through the entire supply chain, from retailer to fulfillment partner.
