HSBC has launched RedCoin (RCHKD), a regulated stablecoin backed by the Hong Kong dollar, through its PayMe mobile payments platform. The stablecoin is now accessible to more than 3.3 million PayMe users, who can activate digital wallets within the app to make instant transfers and payments at over 100,000 participating merchants.
RedCoin is designed to maintain a one-to-one value with the Hong Kong dollar and is backed by highly liquid, segregated assets. HSBC obtained its stablecoin issuer license from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) in April under the city's new regulatory framework. The launch followed months of preparation, including pilot testing with approximately 100 HSBC employees.
The bank plans to expand RedCoin's functionality later this year by integrating stablecoin wallets into its HSBC HK Mobile Banking App. Customers will also be able to use the digital currency to purchase tokenized investment products, including a new share class of the bank's Hong Kong dollar money market fund. HSBC intends to extend RedCoin into wholesale corporate and institutional applications.
The stablecoin launch builds on HSBC's existing blockchain initiatives. The bank's Orion digital bond issuance platform has facilitated more than $8.3 billion in digitally native bond issuances since 2023. HSBC also operates a tokenized gold product that has generated $2.5 billion in trading volume across 390,000 transactions since its 2024 launch, and provides tokenized deposit services for wholesale payments.
The rollout occurs as Hong Kong seeks to establish itself as a global digital asset hub through regulatory oversight and expanded institutional participation in blockchain-based finance.
