The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC) launched HSBC RedCoin [RCHKD], a Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin, on October 23rd. The bank operates under a Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) stablecoin issuer licence, following requirements under Hong Kong's Stablecoins Ordinance.
RedCoin rolled out through PayMe, which serves more than 3.3 million users and over 100,000 merchants. Users can activate an in-app stablecoin wallet for transfers and merchant payments, providing RedCoin with an existing distribution network.
HSBC received its stablecoin issuer licence on April 10th, 2026, alongside Anchorpoint Financial Limited. The HKMA granted these first two licences from a pool of 36 applications. Anchorpoint, a joint venture backed by Standard Chartered, HKT, and Animoca Brands, subsequently introduced its HKDAP stablecoin.
Market Context
U.S. dollar-linked stablecoins dominated the market, representing approximately 99.4% of total stablecoin supply at $298.574 billion. By comparison, HKDAP held a market capitalization of $2.03 million, illustrating the limited circulating value of Hong Kong dollar stablecoins relative to the wider market.
HSBC reported over US$2.5 billion in Gold Token trading and more than $8.3 billion in digitally native bond issuance, demonstrating activity across its digital asset offerings.
Adoption Questions
An established user base offers distribution advantages, but sustained adoption would depend on how often PayMe users actually transact with RedCoin for regular payments. The stablecoin's success will be tested by whether users choose to use it for everyday transactions rather than alternative payment methods.
