Hyperliquid CEO Says Traditional Wall Street Wealth Model Unsustainable for Most Investors

Hyperliquid co-founder and CEO Jeff Yan criticized the traditional wealth-creation model of Wall Street, arguing that it concentrates early gains among a privileged few while excluding retail participants.

Speaking at Token2049 Singapore, Yan noted that significant assets are "only tradable by a few people for many orders of magnitude of its growth, and then ultimately tradable by the public only after all of the growth has been realized by a select few people with privilege." He characterized this dynamic as a byproduct of the broader economy that is not "sustainable."

Yan contended that Hyperliquid's growing revenue stems from providing global access to blockchain-based wealth creation opportunities through its decentralized exchange platform. He emphasized that the company's primary mission is financial openness rather than revenue optimization, stating: "We're not really optimizing for revenue. That's a byproduct of providing value to users."

Platform Features and Market Position

Hyperliquid operates perpetual futures contracts without expiry dates, a structure Yan said reduces trading decisions and prevents liquidity fragmentation. According to DefiLlama, Hyperliquid ranks as the third-largest revenue-generating protocol, generating $72 million over the past 30 days.

The platform's growth has attracted attention from traditional finance. In July, blockchain-focused asset manager Pantera noted that perpetual futures may become a dominant trading instrument in global finance due to structural advantages, with Hyperliquid demonstrating how blockchain infrastructure could challenge traditional markets.

Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, has also engaged with onchain futures infrastructure. CEO Jeffrey Sprecher urged regulators to create a "level playing field" for 24/7 onchain perpetual futures contracts. In March, the NYSE partnered with tokenization platform Securitize to develop blockchain-based stock trading infrastructure featuring 24/7 trading and settlement.
