Hyperliquid, a layer-1 blockchain and perpetual futures exchange, saw its native token HYPE reach an all-time high of $83.27 on Sunday before easing to around $77.50, according to CoinGecko data. The token's market capitalization stands near $19.5 billion, but this market run-up approaches a significant scheduled token release.
On August 29, a scheduled unlock will release 14,175,778 Hyperliquid tokens, representing about 1.4% of the total supply and 2.7% of HYPE's market capitalization. This event constitutes the largest of Hyperliquid's monthly unlocks to date. Since its November 2024 launch, the project has released portions of its 1 billion-token supply on a fixed calendar.
The upcoming release distributes tokens across three categories:
- Insiders: 46.6% (the largest single share, designated for early investors)
- Community: 46.3% (allocated for grants, rewards, and airdrops)
- Hyper Foundation: 7%
Historical market reactions to Hyperliquid's monthly unlocks have been mixed. Following the three prior monthly releases, HYPE moved by 7% downward in July, 1% upward in June, and 14.1% downward in May. Traders closely monitor unlocks directed at early contributors and investors, as these holders acquired tokens at low costs and may have a higher incentive to take profits.
Beyond its token metrics, Hyperliquid recently expanded its presence when Coinbase added 50x perpetual futures to its Base app using Hyperliquid's infrastructure. Additionally, President Donald Trump referenced Hyperliquid during a media appearance, stating that the CFTC is working to bring the platform into the United States in a compliant manner, despite the decentralized exchange currently being geofenced against U.S. users.
With HYPE trading near record levels, the August 29 release introduces approximately $560 million in insider-facing supply to the market, with an identical unlock scheduled to follow on September 29.
