Hyperliquid Pulls Back 3% Following All-Time High and $70B Weekly Volume

The crypto market entered an inflection point following a bullish week spanning from August 19 to August 23, during which large-cap cryptocurrencies posted green candles on daily and weekly charts. Over $480 billion was added to the total crypto market capitalization, with Bitcoin capturing more than 62% of inflows. As the final week of August began, Bitcoin traded down nearly 1.5% intraday, while Hyperliquid's HYPE token experienced a 3% decline over the past session.

Despite the recent pullback, HYPE closed the previous week at a new all-time high, entering a price discovery phase. Market observers note that the 3% dip may have weeded out weak long positions, while rising Open Interest indicates that new positions are being opened to maintain momentum.

Strong Metrics Support Market Activity

Open Interest for Hyperliquid increased by $1 billion over the past week as traders continued purchasing contracts. On-chain data from DeFiLlama highlighted that Hyperliquid's weekly fee generation reached $24.63 million, marking its strongest performance since early June. Additionally, total perpetual volume reached approximately $70 billion, demonstrating that the rally was backed by significant trading activity.

On a relative strength basis, the HYPE/BTC trading pair closed the week up more than 15%, outperforming Bitcoin. By comparison, the ETH/BTC pair closed up 6%, indicating that HYPE's relative strength was more than double that of Ethereum during the same period.

Outlook and Key Tests

Hyperliquid faces a test to determine whether it can retain its edge and hold its gains as the broader market enters a cooling phase. Provided that trading volume, Open Interest, and fee generation continue to rise, the recent downtrend may function as a consolidation phase rather than a market reversal.
