The International Monetary Fund has clarified the source of El Salvador's growing Bitcoin reserves, stating that all additions to official holdings since June 2025 came from private donations rather than public sector purchases.
El Salvador's official Bitcoin tracker showed 7,764.37 BTC at the time of reporting. The country's balance increased by approximately 1,000 BTC in November and has continued to receive one BTC daily through these private contributions.
IMF Agreement Parameters
Bitcoin accumulation has been a key discussion point in El Salvador's $1.4 billion financing programme with the IMF. Under their agreement, the country made several changes to its cryptocurrency framework, including making Bitcoin acceptance voluntary for private businesses and limiting government involvement in BTC purchases.
El Salvador also reduced the operational role of its Chivo crypto wallet, transferring most operations and ownership control to a private operator while retaining responsibility for customer asset custody.
Donations and Future Plans
The IMF did not disclose the identities of the private donors or the amount of Bitcoin contributed by each party. The fund stated that no further Bitcoin purchases beyond the documented private donations are expected.
El Salvador's approach to Bitcoin has shifted from promoting everyday usage to long-term reserve holdings as discussions with the IMF continue regarding cryptocurrency policy frameworks.
