Interactive Brokers Enters Ethereum Staking Market Amid Institutional Growth

Interactive Brokers launched Ethereum staking for eligible clients on October 13, allowing qualifying customers to stake ETH through its Client Portal. The service, powered by crypto infrastructure provider zerohash, automatically compounds rewards in ETH while holdings remain staked.

The expansion integrates cryptocurrency staking into a platform where customers already trade stocks, bonds, futures, and digital assets. According to the brokerage, approximately 43.7 million ETH—representing 35.77% of circulating supply—is committed to validators, worth around $110 billion at current valuations.

Institutional Demand Drives Market Shift

Ethereum staking has grown significantly despite prolonged cryptocurrency price declines. According to Lido's first-half report, staked ETH on the network increased 19% to 43.1 million ETH by June 30, up from 36.3 million at the beginning of January, even as ETH lost 47% of its dollar value.

Much of this growth came from institutional and custodial staking services. Lido reported that the institutional segment's share of staked ETH increased to 35.3% from 25.9% during the six-month period. Meanwhile, Lido's own market share declined to 21.2% from 23.9%, despite an increase in total ETH deposited through its protocol.

Service Details and Constraints

Interactive Brokers CEO Milan Galik compared the staking service to the firm's Stock Yield Enhancement Program, which allows customers to earn income by lending eligible shares. At launch, the product supports Ethereum only, with staking and unstaking requests submitted through the brokerage's dashboard.

The economics of the service remain unclear. Interactive Brokers has not disclosed a specific staking fee or guaranteed annual yield. Zerohash indicates that platforms determine their own customer fees, which are deducted from staking rewards before customers receive their share.

Customers face significant liquidity constraints. Staked ETH cannot be immediately sold or transferred, and withdrawals require an unstaking process subject to Ethereum's validator exit queue. Validatorqueue.com showed approximately 962,000 ETH awaiting validator exits, with an estimated wait of nearly 17 days before an additional withdrawal-processing period. Interactive Brokers has not provided a guaranteed withdrawal deadline for the new staking service.

The service also carries potential penalties for validator misconduct, known as slashing. Interactive Brokers warns that cryptocurrency held through its crypto providers is outside the brokerage's custody and does not qualify for Securities Investor Protection Corp. coverage.
