Intercontinental Exchange Considers Further Investment in Polymarket

Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, is reportedly considering further investment in prediction market platform Polymarket. The potential move comes after ICE already committed up to $2 billion in equity to the platform in a deal that valued Polymarket at roughly $8 billion pre-investment.

Timeline of Investment

The business relationship began in October 2025 when ICE announced a strategic investment of up to $2 billion in Polymarket. This initial commitment involved a $1 billion direct cash injection, which caused ICE stock to rise more than 3% in premarket trading following the announcement.

By March 2026, ICE followed through with an additional $600 million in direct investment. The company also purchased up to $40 million in securities from existing Polymarket holders, fulfilling its total commitment.

Focus on Event-Driven Data and Tokenization

Rather than a focus on gambling, ICE plans to act as the global distributor of Polymarket’s event-driven data to institutional investors, framing the offering around real-time sentiment signals derived from staked capital.

Additionally, ICE and Polymarket have formed a partnership to explore future tokenization initiatives, though no specific crypto tokens are tied directly to the equity investment.

Polymarket Background

Founded in 2020 by Shayne Coplan, Polymarket provides a platform for users to trade on real-world event outcomes spanning politics, sports, and science. The platform drew widespread media attention during the 2024 US presidential election cycle as an alternative to traditional polling, eventually securing an $8 billion pre-investment valuation backed by equity from an NYSE-tier investor.
