Investors Rotate Into Chinese Equity Derivatives as Korean and Japanese Tech Stocks Rally Less

Investors have begun rotating capital away from South Korean memory chip stocks and Japanese semiconductor plays toward Chinese equity derivatives, according to trading activity on offshore perpetual futures platforms. The shift reflects a search for more attractive valuations in China's expanding technology sector after years of aggressive bidding have driven up valuations in Seoul and Tokyo.

The rotation is most visible on offshore perpetual futures markets, including platforms like Hyperliquid and tradeXYZ, which have become conduits for global capital seeking exposure to Chinese AI infrastructure, chipmaking, and robotics companies.

Trading Volume and Capital Flows

Perpetual futures tied to Unitree Robotics surpassed $105 million in 24-hour trade volume following the company's IPO. CXMT, a Chinese memory chipmaker, registered roughly $66 million in open interest in offshore perpetual futures shortly after its July 2026 listing, with daily volume reaching approximately $19 million before the IPO.

Value Partners, an Asia-based fund manager, sold positions in Taiwanese and South Korean AI stocks beginning in August 2025 to redeploy capital into Chinese firms. Korean retail investors alone poured hundreds of millions of dollars into Chinese semiconductor and AI stocks in early 2026.

China's Star 50 index, which tracks innovation-focused companies on the Shanghai Star Market, posted roughly 29% year-to-date returns through mid-August 2026, outpacing the broader CSI 300.

Valuation and Economic Factors

South Korean and Japanese AI-adjacent stocks have become expensive after years of strong demand. While SK Hynix and TSMC remain dominant in the global semiconductor supply chain, their valuations reflect that dominance.

Chinese chipmakers and hyperscalers face lower capital expenditure requirements compared to US and Korean counterparts, potentially enabling faster paths to profitability for newly public companies. Beijing's industrial policy has prioritized tech self-sufficiency, with significant funding directed toward domestic chipmaking, AI model development, and robotics.

Perpetual Futures as Access Point

Perpetual futures do not expire and offer leverage with 24/7 trading on platforms that do not require brokerage accounts with Chinese market access. For foreign investors unable to easily purchase shares on Shanghai or Shenzhen exchanges, these instruments provide a liquid alternative.

Hyperliquid, initially known as a decentralized perpetual futures exchange for crypto assets, has emerged as a venue facilitating this activity. The platform's ability to list new markets within days of an IPO announcement gives it a structural advantage over traditional exchanges requiring lengthy listing processes.

Risks and Constraints

The regulatory environment presents significant risks. Chinese authorities have periodically cracked down on speculative trading, and the use of offshore derivatives to circumvent capital controls exists in a legal gray zone that could tighten. Regulatory intervention from Chinese authorities or jurisdictions hosting these platforms could disrupt access. Liquidity in individual perpetual contracts can evaporate rapidly during market stress, and leverage amplifies losses alongside gains. The 29% year-to-date gain in the Star 50 index may indicate that early opportunities in this rotation have already been captured.
