IonQ Unveils Superion 256 Quantum Computer as Bitcoin Developers Debate Risks

Publicly traded technology company IonQ has unveiled its Superion 256 quantum computer, opening orders for the system with customer deliveries scheduled for 2027. The Maryland-based company builds quantum computers and provides access to them through cloud services, while also developing quantum networking, sensing, and security technology.

According to IonQ Chairman and CEO Niccolo de Masi, the new system is the result of strategic acquisitions, combining Oxford Ionics' technology to control natural, trapped-ion qubits using standard electronics with SkyWater's semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and scale.

IonQ stated that its chipmaking subsidiary, SkyWater, has fabricated the first 256-qubit processors, and teams have trapped the first ions in prototypes across several U.S. facilities. The Superion 256 is designed to fit a standard server rack and will be made accessible via IonQ's cloud services. The company pre-sold its first system in early 2026, and also plans to develop a Superion 10K system, with an aim to demonstrate error-resistant computing in 2027 and begin commercial production in 2028. However, IonQ has not yet disclosed results demonstrating the performance of a complete 256-qubit computer.

The announcement arrives as researchers and developers debate the timeline of when quantum computers could pose a threat to Bitcoin. A sufficiently powerful machine could theoretically use an exposed public key to calculate the secret key needed to spend another user's Bitcoin. Experts note that such an attack would require sustained, reliable calculations utilizing error-protected qubits. Furthermore, a 256-qubit machine does not automatically break 256-bit security, as the two numbers measure different metrics.

Preparations within the cryptocurrency space are already underway. In July, Galaxy announced up to $5 million in funding directed toward Bitcoin quantum-security initiatives, which includes developer grants, research, and an advisory council.
