Iranian Projectiles Strike Five Commercial Vessels in Strait of Hormuz

Over the past week, five commercial vessels have been struck by Iranian projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz. The incidents form part of an ongoing pattern of attacks by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the maritime corridor, which handles approximately 20% of the world's oil trade.

The recent strikes build upon a broader escalation throughout 2026, with Iranian forces targeting commercial ships using drones and projectiles during March, June, July, and August. A serious incident occurred on August 17-18 when the Liberia-flagged bulk carrier Minoan Dignity was struck, resulting in the death of one crew member. Monitoring agencies, including the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations and the Joint Maritime Information Centre, have documented the strikes and issued continuous transit cautions for vessels passing through the region.

Analysts attribute the military actions to Iran's efforts to assert control over waters it claims and to respond to perceived violations by foreign-flagged vessels. Energy and financial markets have reacted to the disruptions, with Brent crude prices climbing more than 2% to around $75 per barrel following a June strike in the waterway.

The attacks have also driven up shipping insurance premiums for vessels transiting the area. In response to the heightened risks, some vessel operators have begun exploring longer alternative routes to bypass the Strait entirely, adding additional days and fuel costs to voyages.

With monitoring agencies maintaining transit cautions and no diplomatic resolution currently in sight, the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical flashpoint for global energy security and supply chains.
