J.P. Morgan Projects Bitcoin to Outperform US Stocks and Gold Over Next Decade

J.P. Morgan Asset Management now expects Bitcoin to outperform US stocks, gold, and REITs over the next ten years, according to its "Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions 2027" report unveiled in October 2026.

The report projects Bitcoin's expected compound return at 10% annually, compared with 7.5% for US large-cap equities and 5.5% for gold. Bitcoin marks the highest-returning asset class in the history of the report's long-term projections and the first time the bank has included Bitcoin in its annual LTCMA.

Return Projections and Volatility

J.P. Morgan estimates Bitcoin's annualized arithmetic return at 20.9%, roughly double the 10% compound figure. The difference reflects the impact of volatility on actual investor returns. The bank pegs Bitcoin's annualized volatility at 55%, significantly higher than the roughly 18% for large-cap stocks and 17.2% for gold.

Arithmetic return represents the simple average of each year's gains or losses, while compound return reflects what an investor actually receives after holding through market fluctuations. Large drawdowns reduce compounding effects, requiring substantial gains to recover from losses.

Forecast Without Portfolio Allocation

Despite including Bitcoin in return projections, J.P. Morgan left it out of the report's sample portfolio allocations. The bank presents its return forecast without recommending specific ownership levels for clients. Bitcoin is also the only digital asset included in the LTCMA assumptions, with no other tokens appearing in the document.

Prior Price Targets

J.P. Morgan's research teams have previously set shorter-term price targets around $170,000 and reiterated a long-term parity level of $266,000, reflecting a scenario in which Bitcoin matches gold on a volatility-adjusted basis. Bitcoin was trading near $82,000 at the time of the report.

Institutional Shift

The inclusion of Bitcoin in formal long-term forecasts represents a change in how major financial institutions approach the asset. The gap between the bank's 20.9% arithmetic return projection and its 10% compound return forecast demonstrates how much of Bitcoin's theoretical upside is consumed by its volatility relative to traditional assets.
