Jack Dorsey's 'No Moat' Comment Sparks Debate Among Crypto Leaders

Block CEO Jack Dorsey posted "there is no moat" on X, attracting over 3.5 million views and prompting responses from prominent figures in cryptocurrency and technology. The statement references investor Warren Buffett's concept of a "moat"—a lasting competitive advantage that shields a company from rivals.

Dorsey's post came shortly after Block introduced Dessa, a voice AI model developed by a small research lab within the company. According to Block, the model was trained exclusively on human conversation without text data or pretrained models, and required only a single Nvidia GB200 NVL72 rack to develop. Dorsey described the model as small enough to run on a MacBook and said Block granted early access to a select group of AI safety researchers.

Some observers linked the "no moat" statement to the Dessa launch, suggesting that a payments company can now build AI rivaling the largest laboratories, indicating that competitive advantages erode quickly.

Competing Visions of Protection

Strategy chairman Michael Saylor responded by arguing that Bitcoin itself represents the moat Dorsey referenced. Saylor has long positioned Bitcoin as a shield for capital against inflation and currency devaluation, and Strategy holds the largest corporate Bitcoin treasury.

Elon Musk offered a different perspective, referencing ancient Sparta and its reliance on military strength rather than physical defenses. Musk has previously noted that Bitcoin's network "has no throat to choke," suggesting its resilience stems from its decentralized structure.

Dorsey has long supported Bitcoin, and in April, Block ran a $1 million Bitcoin giveaway through Cash App. The debate reflects broader questions about how AI and cryptocurrency intersect as software becomes cheaper to replicate, potentially making network size and fixed supply the enduring competitive advantages.
