Japan's Weakening Yen Poses Risk to Bitcoin Through Carry Trade Unwinding

Japan's yen weakened again this week despite approximately $97 billion spent supporting the currency over the past month. The yen fell to 160.16 per dollar on Friday, August 28, surrendering more than half its gains since intervention efforts began in July.

Between July 30 and August 26, Japan spent ¥15.4 trillion supporting its currency. This effort included rare coordinated action with the United States on July 31, when both countries purchased yen to strengthen its value. The weaker yen has made imports more expensive for Japanese households and businesses.

The intervention's limited effectiveness stems partly from interest rate differentials. US interest rates remain higher than Japan's, making dollar-denominated investments more attractive to investors. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh pledged this week to bring inflation to target, providing further support to the dollar.

Carry Trade and Bitcoin Vulnerability

Some investors borrow yen at low rates and invest the proceeds in assets elsewhere—a strategy known as the carry trade. If Japanese intervention or interest rate increases push the yen higher, these loans become more expensive to repay in foreign currencies. Investors may then sell assets, including Bitcoin, to cover their obligations.

Bitcoin briefly fell below $77,000 following Warsh's remarks as markets priced in expectations of higher US rates. This type of asset liquidation has occurred before. In August 2024, a reversal of yen-funded trades amplified selling pressure, with Bitcoin and Ethereum each declining up to 20 percent.

Bitcoin remains vulnerable to sudden market shifts despite ongoing interest in Asian markets. Some industry figures, including Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich, argue that Asian savers may increasingly move beyond cash into Bitcoin holdings, potentially supporting longer-term demand.
