Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin has outlined a vision for how artificial intelligence and blockchain technology will converge. Speaking on CNBC on October 7, 2026, Lubin argued that while AI systems can deliver creativity and expertise, they lack an inherent quality: trust.
Lubin, who founded ConsenSys, framed the problem in two parts. AI can generate ideas and apply knowledge, but it cannot independently establish trustworthiness. Blockchains like Ethereum, he contends, fill that gap by creating a transparent, permanent record of transactions without requiring a middleman.
Trust Through Transparency
In Lubin's model, decentralized protocols on Ethereum would provide the infrastructure for autonomous activity. AI agents could theoretically commission work from other agents, verify completed tasks, and settle payments directly on the blockchain, all recorded transparently.
This concept extends Lubin's earlier statements about increased autonomous on-chain activity driven by AI systems. He has also predicted that Ethereum will evolve into a central settlement layer—a back-office network where software systems settle accounts rather than a platform where humans primarily interact.
Institutional Privacy and Regulation
Lubin highlighted the importance of privacy tools for institutional adoption. EthSystems, a project backed by Lubin, aims to provide privacy technology for institutions on Ethereum, allowing them to benefit from shared ledger efficiency without exposing transactions to competitors.
On the regulatory front, Lubin indicated that clarity is expected from the SEC and CFTC. He distinguished between regulatory agencies and Congress as sources of guidance, suggesting the industry may receive rules through regulators before new legislation emerges.
