JPMorgan has launched JPM Coin on Ethereum, expanding access to its blockchain-based dollar token for institutional clients. The move follows the bank's November 2025 debut of the token on Coinbase's Base network.
JPM Coin functions as a deposit token, with each unit representing a dollar already held in a JPMorgan account. Clients can redeem the token for dollars at any time without lock-up periods. Unlike stablecoins issued by private companies, JPM Coin is backed by actual deposits on the bank's balance sheet.
The token is restricted to vetted and approved counterparties and is not available for purchase on public exchanges. JPMorgan designed the token to enable near-instantaneous settlement on weekends and outside traditional banking hours, a significant advantage over standard wire transfers that typically process only during business hours and can take multiple days to complete.
Use cases and adoption
JPMorgan expects cryptocurrency firms to use JPM Coin for payments, while traditional financial institutions can use it to settle trades in tokenized assets or post collateral.
The bank has also announced plans to bring JPM Coin to Canton Network, a privacy-focused blockchain designed for financial markets. Additionally, JPMorgan issued two tokenized money-market funds on Ethereum in December 2025 and May 2026, representing traditional short-term debt instruments as blockchain tokens.
According to DefiLlama, approximately $50 billion in assets currently sit in applications on Ethereum, reflecting growing institutional interest in blockchain-based financial infrastructure.
Broader industry momentum
JPMorgan's expansion reflects wider convergence between traditional finance and blockchain technology. The bank's Kinexys unit has processed more than $4 trillion in cumulative transactions and averages approximately $7 billion daily, compared to roughly $12 trillion daily across JPMorgan's broader payments business.
JPMorgan, Citigroup, and other major banks are planning a shared 24/7 tokenized deposit network, with an anticipated launch as early as the first half of 2027.
The move also positions JPM Coin as an alternative to stablecoins, which are issued by private companies holding reserves off-chain. JPMorgan has highlighted deposit tokens as potential yield-bearing instruments that can offer interest payments.
