Kamino Launches Solana Lending Market Using Tokenized Equity Collateral

Kamino has launched a dedicated Backpack Market on Solana enabling eligible users to post selected tokenized equities as collateral for USDC borrowing. The initial supported assets include tokens referencing Micron, SK Hynix, SpaceX, and SanDisk, each backed one-to-one by securities within Backpack's regulated structure. Lending terms are managed by Kamino's market mechanism and risk curator Allez Labs.

The market operates as an isolated lending pool designed to contain exposure to separate pools. Each eligible token has specific risk settings reflecting liquidity and oracle coverage. Borrowing capacity varies materially by asset, and users remain responsible for maintaining collateral above liquidation thresholds.

Collateralized Lending Structure

Collateralized loans allow investors to retain exposure to an asset while accessing cash against part of its value. On-chain protocols implement this through smart contracts, collateral ratios, liquidation thresholds, and pricing feeds. Kamino's isolated market design aims to limit cross-contamination between different lending pools.

Tokenization and Market Risk

The development represents tokenized equities gaining utility beyond holding or trading a stock representation. However, borrowing against volatile assets does not eliminate risk. Tokenized equities are not ordinary Solana-native cryptocurrencies and their value depends on underlying securities and custody arrangements.

A significant challenge exists in timing: blockchains operate continuously, including weekends and holidays, while prices of many underlying shares are established only during conventional market sessions. When price feeds reflect the most recent market value while an exchange is closed, fresh information can accumulate without updating the displayed collateral ratio. Upon reopening, a large price adjustment may push positions into liquidation.

The market carries issuer, custody, smart-contract, and legal risks alongside the inherent liquidation dangers of margin-like transactions. Users should distinguish between tokens issued by Backpack and the lending infrastructure supplied by Kamino.
