Kraken xStocks Surpasses $1 Billion in Assets as Tokenized Equities Market Expands

Kraken xStocks has surpassed $1 billion in assets under management, reaching the milestone on October 27, according to Payward, the infrastructure company behind Kraken. The growth represents more than a fourfold increase from February, when assets stood near $225 million.

The ecosystem has expanded significantly since its launch in June 2025. Payward reported over $45 billion in cumulative transaction volume and more than 550,000 holders. The network now includes more than 1,500 tokenized representations of stocks, funds, and IPO exposure spanning the US, UK, Europe, and Hong Kong.

Broader Ecosystem and DeFi Integration

Kraken xStocks operate across more than ten blockchains, with tokens transferable to compatible wallets for use on supported applications. The company reported more than $100 million in tokens deployed in decentralized finance, where eligible holders can use tokens as collateral or lend them. Bybit has enabled six xStocks as collateral for certain lending and margin products.

Trading extends beyond traditional stock market hours, with most assets trading around the clock on weekdays. Selected assets are available weekends on Kraken Pro, though direct issuance and redemption through the issuer operates on weekdays.

Ownership and Rights Structure

Jersey-based Backed Assets (JE) Limited issues Kraken xStocks as digital debt instruments called tracker certificates, with each collateralized by the corresponding stock or fund held with regulated custodians. Holders receive economic exposure to underlying assets but do not own the shares directly, receive voting rights, or hold a direct claim to the underlying company's stock.

Dividend proceeds can be reinvested into the underlying asset and reflected in token balances through an adjustment rather than paid as ordinary cash dividends.

Geographic Restrictions and Risks

Kraken xStocks are unavailable to US persons and customers in the UK, Canada, and Australia. Availability varies by eligible country and trading platform. While Payward reported over 1,500 tokenized representations ecosystem-wide, Kraken lists fewer products with geographic restrictions noted on its support page as of October 30.

The products carry issuer, custody, and liquidity risks. Using tokens in DeFi adds smart contract and liquidation risks, and outside exchange hours, lower liquidity can widen spreads between buyers and sellers.

Competitive Landscape and Regulation

Competition is growing in the tokenized equities market. Ondo Finance reported its competing Ondo Stocks products passed $1 billion in total value locked in May 2026.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission is developing rules for tokenized stock trading under a separate framework. The SEC granted conditional relief to qualifying venues in September. Under SEC rules, tokens must provide holders the same rights as conventional shares. Microsoft, Alphabet, and Goldman Sachs objected to their shares trading on the proposed OKXICE venue operating under this framework.
