KuCoin has launched KCUSD, a yield-bearing USD asset designed to generate passive income from stablecoins. Users deposit USDT, USDC, or USDG and receive KCUSD at a 1:1 ratio, earning daily compounding returns with no fixed lockup period.
The product offers a standard APR of up to 4%, with promotional rates of up to 6% available to eligible participants. At the 6% rate, a $10,000 deposit would generate approximately $600 annually before compounding effects.
How KCUSD Works
KCUSD functions as an earn certificate representing a user's stablecoin position. Users can request redemption back into their original deposited stablecoin at any time. The product is currently designed for use within the KuCoin ecosystem, and rewards compound automatically beginning the day after subscription.
Integration with Trading Accounts
A key feature is KCUSD's integration with KuCoin's Unified Trading Account (UTA). Eligible VIP1 and above users can use KCUSD as trading collateral while the balance continues earning its base yield. This allows capital to potentially serve dual purposes—generating passive income while remaining available for active trading.
Strengths and Limitations
The product offers simplicity with no minimum terms, automatic compounding, and straightforward entry and exit through major stablecoins. However, users who wish to move funds to personal wallets, other exchanges, or DeFi applications must first redeem KCUSD into supported stablecoins, subject to applicable redemption rules.
Access to trading functionality depends on account eligibility, with KuCoin indicating a phased rollout to eligible users.
Risk Considerations
KCUSD is a custodial exchange product carrying different risks than self-custody. The APR is subject to change. Redemptions may be delayed or restricted under certain conditions. KuCoin's terms disclose risks linked to third-party asset managers and note that extreme circumstances could result in partial or total loss of subscribed assets.
Users do not directly control the assets or investments generating returns, creating exchange counterparty risk.
