Cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has secured the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification for its Artificial Intelligence Management System, establishing a dedicated AI-governance standard as digital asset platforms increasingly incorporate artificial intelligence into their operations.
Published in December 2023, ISO/IEC 42001 is the world's first international management-system standard for artificial intelligence. The framework sets requirements for establishing, maintaining, and continually improving an AI management system, focusing heavily on accountability, transparency, risk management, and human oversight rather than certifying individual software applications.
KuCoin stated that the certification applies to the management framework supporting its global digital-asset exchange. The company utilizes AI across several operational areas, including anti-money laundering, fraud detection, market surveillance, customer service, product intelligence, and operational automation.
The certification arrives as financial companies expand AI utilization into functions that directly influence compliance, risk management, and customer outcomes. Analysts at S&P Global have previously cautioned that increasingly complex AI systems could amplify risks such as privacy issues, operational failures, and potential financial instability without adequate governance.
KuCoin Chief Executive Officer BC Wong emphasized the necessity of balancing technological advancement with proper oversight. "AI is becoming a foundational capability of digital financial infrastructure, but greater capability must be matched by greater responsibility," Wong said, adding that the platform remains committed to ensuring transparency and accountability across its AI capabilities.
The new credential supplements KuCoin's existing security and operational framework, which already includes ISO/IEC 27001 certification for information security, SOC 2 Type II attestation, and ISO 22301 certification for business continuity and operational resilience.
