LayerZero has introduced ATLAS, a new trading and settlement engine designed to operate underneath exchanges rather than competing with them. Following the announcement, LayerZero's ZRO token climbed more than 20% during the session.
ATLAS features no dedicated application or frontend interface. Instead, trading venues plug into the engine to handle matching, clearing, settlement, and risk systems while retaining their own customer interfaces. LayerZero is releasing two versions of the software: one tailored for crypto applications and prediction markets, and another designed for firms that must enforce strict compliance rules on the same infrastructure. The engine supports various markets, ranging from spot trading and perpetual contracts to stocks, bonds, commodities, and predictions.
The ZRO token is integrated directly into the economic model of ATLAS. Trading venues can stake ZRO to receive fee rebates ranging between 20% and 65%. After these rebates are distributed, 75% of the remaining fees are utilized to buy back and burn ZRO tokens, while the remaining 25% is allocated to the respective market creator.
The launch arrives following a challenging period for the LayerZero ecosystem. In April, a security incident resulted in the loss of approximately $292 million from Kelp DAO’s LayerZero-powered bridge. Following the incident, several protocols departed from the network, including BitGo’s wrapped Bitcoin holdings and assets from Wyoming’s state stablecoin, totaling roughly $15 billion in outflows.
