NBA superstar LeBron James posted a video on X and Instagram Saturday hinting at an upcoming partnership with Polymarket, the leading prediction marketplace. In the video, James enters an elevator with buttons labeled "politics," "crypto," "sports," "economy," and "culture," selects "sports," and walks into an office setting. He captioned the post "Welcome to Polymarket HQ. Coming soon" and "In partnership with Polymarket."
The announcement comes as prediction markets have grown into a multi-billion-dollar industry. According to Dune Analytics, nine major prediction markets logged $49.9 billion in notional volume in June, $56.4 billion in July, and $50.7 billion in August. Polymarket and Kalshi led the sector during this period, with sports betting driving significant demand.
James has previous experience with digital asset partnerships. In 2022, he and the LeBron James Family Foundation signed a multi-year deal with Crypto.com. Prediction markets have also drawn significant betting activity related to James himself—over $80 million in volume was recorded on wagers about which team he would join after leaving the Lakers.
The Polymarket post generated mixed reactions on social media. Polymarket's official account responded with "thanks for swinging by our HQ." However, some users criticized the partnership, with critical replies accumulating substantial engagement on the platform.
