Ledger Launches $849 Android Signer After Addressing Hardware Implant Incident

Ledger unveiled Atom on Thursday, an $849 Android-based device designed to sign cryptocurrency transactions alongside a user's phone. The device features a separate secure element chip running Ledger OS that takes control of the screen when users approve payments or transactions, while a standard Android interface handles everyday applications.

The device maintains data-only mobile connectivity with no cellular calls, SMS, or emergency services capability. Atom ships with Solana Mobile's Seeker app preinstalled, providing access to the Solana dApp Store. Reservations began at a Founders Edition price with a fully refundable $100 deposit, with the price rising to $899 after launch. Ledger's website lists the Founders Edition as shipping in summer 2027.

Reseller Restrictions Implemented

In response to recent supply chain concerns, Ledger implemented new restrictions for authorized resellers effective Thursday. Resellers must now keep Ledger products in back stock rather than on shelves or displays, and must hand over inventory at the point of purchase. Ledger also stipulated that returned devices can never be resold, regardless of their condition.

These measures followed Ledger's decision to ask authorized resellers in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong to suspend sales. German retailer MediaMarkt also paused sales during the investigation.

Response to Hardware Implant Attack

The Atom launch came days after Ledger confirmed a suspected $86 million drain tied to reseller CryptoBilis, an authorized Ledger distributor in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. On October 10, Ledger confirmed an unauthorized hardware implant was found inside an affected user's device.

Ledger's investigation revealed that a criminal group purchased genuine devices and fitted them with hidden components designed to capture recovery phrases during setup, then resold the tampered devices through Southeast Asian resellers. Ledger stated that no flaws were found in its chip, operating system, or servers, characterizing the incident as a localized distribution attack rather than a systemic supply chain compromise.

According to Ledger, Atom's design would have prevented similar screen-reading implants through an enclosure that detects drilling or opening attempts. The device also detects removal of its display or back cover, with each back cover paired to an individual device.
