Ledger presented Atom on October 15, a phone-shaped cryptocurrency cold wallet designed to isolate everyday applications from the secure system that stores users' private keys. The device represents the company's response to recent security incidents involving tampered hardware.
Reservations for Atom are available now through a refundable $100 deposit. A Founders Edition is priced at $849, though Ledger noted that pricing and other specifications may change before launch. Delivery is scheduled for 2027.
Separation of Applications and Transactions
Atom runs everyday apps on a separate system from the protected environment that authorizes transactions. When a transaction requires approval, Ledger's security system takes control of the screen, and an illuminated indicator signals that users have entered protected mode. This design allows users to verify transaction details independently rather than relying solely on information displayed by standard applications.
The device includes a physical switch to disable the camera and microphone.
Response to Tampering Incidents
The announcement follows Ledger's disclosure of security breaches involving tampered devices distributed through resellers in Southeast Asia. Ledger explained that criminals may have purchased genuine devices, inserted hidden components designed to capture recovery phrases during user registration, and returned them through reseller networks. Access to recovery phrases allows unauthorized wallet access.
Ledger stated that its hardware, platform, and servers were not compromised in the incidents. The company has temporarily halted reseller and distributor sales in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong. Atom features a protective shield to detect physical interference with its secure components.
