An Ethereum investment product can advertise staking exposure without deploying every unit of its ETH to generate rewards. Lido's October 23 institutional note examines how European exchange-traded products structure their capital allocation, drawing attention to the cash-management decisions that determine the reward figures investors see.
Lido argues that three factors shape ETP rewards: staking allocation, fees, and liquidity management. The firm promotes liquid staking as an alternative to holding unstaked buffers and uses WisdomTree's stETH-backed product as a comparison example.
How Liquidity Buffers Affect Returns
Products holding unstaked liquidity buffers may earn rewards on less than their full ETH exposure. In Lido's illustrative example, a product with 100 ETH and a 20 ETH unstaked buffer would leave only 80 ETH generating staking rewards. If the staked portion earned 3% annually, it would produce 2.4 ETH before fees and other adjustments.
A buffer is not necessarily wasted capital. It can provide liquidity when redemptions arrive or when network processes require time. The operational question is what benefit the buffer provides and how much reward the product forgoes in exchange.
Withdrawal Timelines and Network Constraints
Ethereum's withdrawal documentation shows that exiting validators pass through network processes and that demand can affect the timeline. A fund's commercial deadline does not accelerate the underlying protocol queue.
Liquid Staking and Market Execution Risk
Transferable claims on staked ETH can be sold without waiting for validators to fully exit. However, a sale requires buyers at an acceptable price. Transferability does not guarantee that large transactions will execute at the value used in a fund's accounting.
During ordinary trading, market makers may provide liquidity efficiently. Under market stress, available liquidity and transaction costs become more important. A structure supporting full staking can still face difficult execution decisions when many holders seek liquidity simultaneously.
Comparing Products Requires Examining Complete Structure
Allocation, net reward sharing, liquidity arrangements, and market depth must be examined together before two headline staking rates can be meaningfully compared. The underlying asset's name alone cannot fully describe an investor's actual payout.
