Lighter's LIT Token Climbs Over 15% as Exchange Eyes US License Filing

Lighter's LIT token rose more than 15% on October 21, 2026, reaching approximately $3.90, after the perpetual futures exchange said it plans to seek a US license next month.

Lighter's management intends to file for a derivatives license with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) in November 2026. If approval eventually comes, it could open the door to wider institutional access in the US market.

What's driving the move

Lighter is a decentralized exchange built around perpetual futures, or "perps." These are futures contracts that never expire, allowing traders to hold a leveraged bet on an asset's price indefinitely without ever owning the asset itself.

Founder Vladimir Novakovski has said the team has spent roughly a year in conversations with regulators. The research cites more than 11 months of discussions ahead of the planned filing.

His stated goal is to make Lighter the first on-chain perpetual decentralized exchange to obtain legal approvals from the CFTC. Such approval could also lay the groundwork for a dedicated US operating entity.

The Robinhood connection

Robinhood Chain launched on July 1, 2026, and integrated Lighter for perpetual trading. The arrangement uses a 50/50 revenue split on trades executed through the platform.

According to the research, millions of dollars in trading volume have already been routed through the partnership. Lighter has set aside 11 million LIT tokens for incentives, with activity through the Robinhood Wallet earning double points.

Lighter has also been expanding its product lineup, recently introducing binary options on BTC and ETH. These allow traders to bet on whether a price will be above or below a set level at a set time, with an essentially yes-or-no payout.

Background: money, backers and burns

Lighter is operated by Elliot Technologies, a company based in Delaware. In November 2025, it raised $68 million at a $1.5 billion valuation. Robinhood Ventures was among the backers.

On the token side, protocol revenues fund ongoing buybacks and burns of LIT, with millions of tokens burned each quarter. Fewer tokens in circulation means each remaining token represents a larger slice of the supply.

What this means

The most consequential piece here is the CFTC filing, not the price move. A successful application would put Lighter in a different category, potentially making it a regulated on-chain venue that US institutions can access.

For LIT holders, the setup has a few moving parts. Revenue sharing with Robinhood drives volume, volume drives protocol revenue, and protocol revenue funds buybacks and burns.

Regulatory approval is uncertain and can take time, and the filing itself is still weeks away. The research flags both regulatory hurdles and market swings as ongoing challenges.

Novakovski is explicitly aiming for first-mover status among on-chain perp exchanges seeking CFTC approval. What to watch next: whether the CFTC filing lands in November as planned, how regulators respond to it, and whether trading volume through Robinhood Chain keeps growing. The pace of quarterly token burns will offer another read on how much revenue the protocol is actually generating.
