SideSwap has reopened its markets on the Liquid network, allowing trading of Liquid Bitcoin (L-BTC) while the process to convert L-BTC back to Bitcoin remains closed. The divergence between trading availability and redemption access means L-BTC now has a market price before holders can redeem their holdings.
On-chain data captured at 22:55 UTC on September 10 showed 4,229 L-BTC in circulation against 3,601 BTC held in the Liquid Federation reserve, implying reserve coverage of approximately 85.15%. This represents a gap of roughly 627 BTC at that moment.
According to SideSwap's September 10 statement, Liquid was producing blocks and all SideSwap markets were open. However, new peg-ins and peg-outs through SideSwap remained closed while the Liquid Federation continued its security review.
Trading and Redemption Serve Different Functions
Trading venues record prices that counterparties accept, while the peg-out process burns L-BTC on Liquid and directs the federation to release BTC on the Bitcoin network. SideSwap operates as a central-limit-order-book-style market with L-BTC as the base asset, though a direct L-BTC/BTC order book has not been identified.
Before the network incident, redemption arbitrage helped maintain price parity between the two assets. With federation peg-outs suspended, price parity becomes a confidence signal rather than proof of backing. The near-85% reserve coverage distinguishes between the price holders expect in the market and the actual exit liquidity available.
Phased Restart Continues
Liquid's restart remains a staged process. As of 10:00 UTC on September 10, block production had resumed in a controlled mode without transactions. By 22:55 UTC, the Liquid explorer showed continuing block production at height 4,051,868.
Liquid's homepage indicated that issued-asset transfers had resumed while L-BTC transfers and peg-outs remained paused. SideSwap stated that swaps and all markets were open. Peg-ins and peg-outs already in progress through its service would be completed after blocks resumed.
Path to Full Recovery
Restoring the L-BTC peg requires three conditions: sufficient reserve BTC, functioning authorized infrastructure for redemptions, and clear operating guidelines. SideSwap cited a statement from Blockstream CEO Adam Back that the L-BTC-to-BTC peg would receive one-for-one coverage, though timing and funding method remain undisclosed. Blockstream's status page described reserve restoration as in progress without naming a capital source or deadline.
Until peg-outs resume and holders can redeem L-BTC for BTC at par value, the market price of L-BTC reflects confidence in the recovery process rather than demonstrated redemption capability.
