London Metal Exchange Plans to Tokenize Metal Reserves for Business Financing

The London Metal Exchange (LME), one of the world's largest metal bourses, is in early stages of exploring tokenization of its off-warrant metal inventories to support business financing, the exchange confirmed.

Off-warrant metal refers to inventory not linked to any exchange title document. Previously, the LME had no standard mechanism to use these assets for financing purposes. Under the proposed tokenization plan, the exchange would issue digital tokens backed by its metal reserves, which could be held in escrow by third parties to secure loans and other obligations.

The LME stated: "The LME is at the early stages of exploring the tokenization of off-warrant metal inventories to support financing of business. We will be engaging with stakeholders as we formulate our plans."

The initiative aligns with China's 15th five-year plan from March, which targets Hong Kong as a digital commodity hub. The plan emphasizes leveraging "Hong Kong's unique advantages as an approved delivery point within the London Metal Exchange's global warehousing network to drive the synergised development of more commodities-related trading, risk management, and financing businesses."

Hong Kong was approved as an LME warehouse location in January, though warehouse rent there is significantly higher than in other parts of Asia.

If realized, the LME would become among the first metal exchanges to issue reserve-backed tokens. The LME traded $21 trillion in notional value last year, equivalent to 4 billion tonnes of metals.

Tokenization initiatives in the commodities space have expanded in recent years. HSBC launched a platform in 2023 to tokenize gold bars held in its warehouses, allowing customers to track and trade bullion as digital assets, initially targeting institutional customers. Other tokenized commodity offerings include Tether's XAUT and Paxos's PAXG.
