Lucid has recalled 27,185 Air luxury sedans in the U.S. due to fire risk associated with an exterior lighting circuit, marking the company's largest recall to date. The overheated circuit may also cause the vehicle's exterior lights to fail, potentially increasing crash risk, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration assessment.
The recall involves 70% more vehicles than Lucid delivered globally in the prior year. For perspective, the company delivered 15,841 vehicles globally last year, making this recall substantially larger than its annual sales volume.
To mitigate risk, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration advised owners of affected vehicles to park them outdoors and away from structures until the recall remedy is completed. Lucid has issued an over-the-air software update to address the problem, with 20,719 of the affected vehicles already receiving the update as of the company's announcement.
This recall adds to Lucid's recall history this year. In May, the automaker recalled 2,039 vehicles over a potential loss of drive power. In January, it recalled more than 10,000 vehicles due to issues affecting rearview-camera images.
The recall comes as Lucid faces broader operational pressures, including a recent announcement of an "operational reset" that involved 1,500 layoffs.
