Luke Dashjr Exits OCEAN Mining After BIP-110 Dispute

Luke Dashjr has left OCEAN Mining, resigning as chairman, chief technology officer, and director. Mummolin Inc., OCEAN's parent company, repurchased all of his equity in what both sides described as a mutually agreed separation announced on August 30, 2026.

The departure followed a contentious period surrounding BIP-110, a proposal that sought temporary restrictions on embedding non-financial data into Bitcoin transactions. The proposal failed to gain broad miner support, with signaling peaking at approximately 2.6% of network hashrate, far below the 55% threshold supporters sought.

During the dispute, enforcing nodes began rejecting blocks that did not signal support for BIP-110. A minority fork produced only two blocks before stalling, while Bitcoin's dominant chain continued normally, demonstrating the proposal's limited adoption among miners. OCEAN had supported BIP-110 by default but operated its Decentralized Alternative Templates for Universal Mining protocol, which gave individual miners control over their block templates. This structure allowed miners to make independent transaction-selection decisions, and one miner connected to OCEAN produced a block without signaling BIP-110 support.

Dashjr subsequently took a sabbatical from his chairman and CTO responsibilities and was removed as a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal repository editor amid disagreements over BIP-110 and editorial governance.

OCEAN said its transparent, non-custodial mining model will continue operating despite the leadership change. The pool accounted for approximately 2.88% of Bitcoin blocks over the trailing week, with hashrate estimated at about 25.33 exahashes per second. The company has not announced replacements for Dashjr's positions.

Dashjr is moving to CONVOY, a separate venture focused on decentralizing Bitcoin mining, though details about its infrastructure, fees, and launch schedule have not been disclosed.
