Current cryptocurrency investors are more likely to increase their holdings than investors in other asset classes, according to Charles Schwab's 2026 Modern Wealth Survey released Wednesday.
The survey found that six in 10 existing cryptocurrency investors plan to invest more over the next 12 months. This share exceeds investors planning to add to other holdings: 56% for ETFs, 52% for stocks, 42% for bonds, and 41% for mutual funds.
Broader Adoption and Demographics
One in five Americans overall now own cryptocurrency, while another one in five say they do not own it but are interested in buying it. Among the broader investor population, nearly half own cryptocurrency.
Younger investors are driving much of the interest. Millennials own cryptocurrency at more than four times the rate of Baby Boomers.
Schwab's Crypto Expansion
Charles Schwab, the country's largest custodian for registered investment advisors, began a phased rollout of Schwab Crypto to retail clients earlier this year, offering direct access to bitcoin trading along with educational resources and professional support. The firm also provides crypto-linked exchange-traded funds, bitcoin futures, and the Schwab Crypto Thematic Index ETF.
According to CEO Rick Wurster, Schwab clients hold more than 20% of all crypto exchange-traded products across the industry.
Survey Details
The online survey was conducted by Logica Research from August 24 to September 17, 2026, among a national sample of 2,000 Americans ages 21 to 75.
