Wallets tied to Marathon Digital Holdings, one of the largest public bitcoin miners, transferred approximately 1,000 BTC worth $82.8 million to cryptocurrency exchanges over a five-day period. The transfers occurred as the company's stock declined sharply, falling 44.8% from $13.63 on September 22 to $7.53 on October 16.
The transfers were split across multiple exchanges in two separate batches. On October 14, a relay wallet labeled "MARA: Miner" sent 500 BTC split among Binance, Gate, and Coinbase. On October 19, another 500 BTC was divided evenly between Binance and Gate, allocating approximately 550 BTC to Binance, 350 BTC to Gate, and 100 BTC to Coinbase overall.
Onchain data reveals this pattern is part of a longer trend. The relay wallet has received and forwarded approximately 5,297 BTC across 69 transactions since mid-April. Transfer batches have grown larger over time, increasing from mostly 100 BTC during summer months to consistent 500 BTC lots since late September. In the past month alone, approximately 2,000 BTC has moved through this path, valued at roughly $165 million at current prices.
Strategic Shift Away from Bitcoin Hoarding
Marathon Digital has moved away from its earlier strategy of holding all mined bitcoin. The company sold 23,093 bitcoin during the first half of 2026 at an average price of $70,631. According to its second-quarter 10-Q filing, Marathon generated $1.63 billion in proceeds from digital asset sales over six months and used approximately $913 million to repay convertible notes. The company ended June holding 35,577 BTC, of which 4,528 BTC was pledged as collateral.
Focus on AI and Computing Infrastructure
Marathon's financial filings indicate a strategic reallocation toward artificial intelligence initiatives and high-performance computing. Chief Executive Fred Thiel stated confidence in securing two AI data center leases by year-end. Additionally, mining conditions have become more challenging as network difficulty increased 5.92% on October 16, reducing the bitcoin earned per unit of computational power.
Market Performance
Marathon's stock has significantly underperformed bitcoin. The miner's shares dropped 9.6% on October 16 alone as part of the broader decline. Meanwhile, bitcoin has held relatively steady, trading near $82,300, up approximately 1% over the same period. Market analysts suggest investors are valuing Marathon increasingly as an artificial intelligence infrastructure investment rather than a straightforward bitcoin proxy.
